A motorcycle VIN check means reading the vehicle identification number (VIN) stamped on a bike's frame, comparing it with the V5C registration certificate, and then using a history check to see what is recorded against that number. On most modern bikes the VIN is 17 characters long, identifies the manufacturer and model, and is unique to that one machine. A free registration lookup shows make, model, colour, MOT and tax status, but it does not show the VIN, so the number has to be read from the bike itself.

Updated October 2026 · Independent information, not legal advice

Bikes are stolen, cloned and rebuilt more often than most buyers realise, and the number plate on its own proves little because a plate can be moved. The frame number is the anchor. Before you hand over money, check that the number on the frame, the number on the V5C and the number in any history report agree, and that the frame has not been tampered with.

What Is A Motorcycle VIN?

A motorcycle VIN is the unique identification code for a bike, usually 17 characters on machines built from the early 1980s onward, stamped on the frame and recorded on the V5C.

What the characters mean

The code is made of sections that identify the manufacturer, the vehicle attributes and a serial number. A decoder can usually tell you the maker and model line, and sometimes the model year. See decoding a vehicle identification number for how the sections work.

Frame number or VIN?

Older bikes carry a frame number that may be shorter than 17 characters. It plays the same role and is recorded on the V5C in the same way.

Where Is The VIN On A Motorcycle?

The VIN is usually stamped on the steering head, the front of the frame near the headstock, though position varies by make and model.

  • The steering head tube, often on the right side.
  • A plate or sticker on the frame.
  • Under the seat or on a lower frame rail on some models.
  • On the V5C and, often, insurance documents.

Engine number is different

The engine number is stamped on the crankcase and is separate. The V5C records both, and a mismatch between them and the bike is worth investigating.

Use a torch and clean the area

Dirt, paint or a shiny repaint over the stamping can hide or alter the digits. A clean, original-looking stamp is a good sign; fresh paint over the number is not.

How Do I Run A Bike VIN Number Check?

A bike vin number check has four steps and takes only a few minutes in person.

  1. Read the VIN from the frame and write it down exactly.
  2. Compare it with the V5C and the engine number.
  3. Look up the registration with the free number plate check to confirm make, model, colour and year.
  4. Run a paid history check if you want finance, theft and write-off information.

Photograph everything

Take clear photos so that you can compare them later or show them to a dealer or the police.

  • The stamped VIN or frame number, in good light.
  • The engine number on the crankcase.
  • The V5C, including the issue date.
  • The number plate and the overall condition of the frame.

Does A Free Lookup Show The VIN?

No. The free lookup shows make, model, colour, fuel type, engine capacity, year of manufacture, MOT status and history, and tax status. The VIN is not part of that public data.

How to get a VIN from a registration

Getting it from a reg means asking the seller to show you the frame, reading the V5C, or using the manufacturer or a commercial history service. See how to get a VIN from a reg.

Why that is a good thing

If the free lookup returned the VIN, a thief could copy it onto a stolen bike. Keeping it out of the public lookup helps protect owners.

What Does A Motorbike VIN Check Not Show?

A VIN check and a registration lookup are different tools.

What each check can show for a bike
CheckShowsDoes not show
Free registration lookupMake, model, colour, MOT, taxVIN, finance, theft
Frame inspectionThe stamped VIN and signs of tamperingHistory
V5CVIN, engine number, keeperFinance, theft
Commercial history checkFinance, write-off, stolen markersOwner identity
Police enquiryStolen statusFinance

A free lookup still helps

Check the MOT history for mileage and advisory notes, which often hint at past damage or neglect.

How Do I Check A Bike Is Not Stolen?

Compare the VIN with the V5C, and run a check that includes the Police National Computer stolen markers through a recognised history service. See how to check if a vehicle is stolen.

Signs of a stolen or cloned bike

  • A frame number that has been ground, repunched or repainted.
  • A seller who will not show the V5C or meet at their home.
  • A price far below market.
  • An engine number that does not match the paperwork.

What to do if you suspect it

Do not buy. Report your concerns to the police and, if you have already paid, tell the seller you will be involving them.

How Do I Check Finance On A Bike?

Finance is held by lenders and shown on commercial history checks, not on the free lookup. A bike with outstanding finance may be repossessed even if you paid the seller.

Why it matters

Three outcomes are possible if finance is outstanding:

  • The lender may repossess the bike.
  • The seller may have to settle the finance first.
  • You may be left with a dispute and no bike.

If the finance company still has an interest, you may not get clean title. See motorbike HPI check for how that kind of check works and the finance checker for the principle.

How Do I Check If A Bike Has Been Written Off?

Insurers record write-off categories A, B, S and N. S and N are repairable categories; a bike in one of them can return to the road after repair. See checking if a car has been written off, which applies equally to bikes.

What to ask the seller

Ask if there has been an insurance claim for damage, and ask for repair invoices. A history check confirms the answer.

  • Was the bike ever recorded in category S or N?
  • Who carried out the repair?
  • Is there paperwork for replaced frame parts?

Does The VIN Appear On The Number Plate?

No. A motorcycle number plate shows only the registration. The VIN is on the frame and the V5C. The registration may have been transferred, so the plate alone does not identify a particular bike.

Why plates and frames can differ

A private plate can be moved between vehicles. See motorbike number plates for plate rules. A bike must also display its plate according to the regulations.

What Does The V5C Show About The Bike?

The V5C records the registered keeper, the registration, VIN or frame number, engine number, make, model, colour and date of first registration.

The registered keeper is not necessarily the owner

The V5C names the keeper, not the legal owner. For a motorbike on finance, the lender may still own it.

Check the V5C features

Look at the paper, the watermark and the issue date. See V5C issue date and what a registration document shows.

Can I Find A Bike By VIN If The Plate Has Changed?

A manufacturer or a history service can often link a VIN to a registration and its past records, which helps when a plate has been transferred.

Retained plates

If the owner retained the plate, the bike would normally have been given another registration. See how to retain a number plate.

What About Imported And Kit Bikes?

Imported bikes may have a VIN in a different format, and some need approval before registration. Kit and custom builds may use a frame number issued through the DVLA process.

Grey imports

Check the registration documents carefully. An imported bike with missing paperwork can be hard to register and to insure.

Custom builds and rebuilds

Where a frame has been replaced or rebuilt, the VIN should be re-recorded through the DVLA, and the V5C should reflect it.

Scooters, Mopeds And Trikes

Mopeds and scooters also have VINs, and the same checks apply. Smaller machines may have simpler plates and registration rules.

Electric motorbikes

Electric bikes carry VINs too and can have the same history risks. Fuel type will show as electric on the record.

Does Motorcycle Tax Or MOT Help?

The tax and MOT records give a quick check on legal status. See motorcycle road tax for how bike tax works.

MOT mileage

MOT mileage readings show how the bike has been used and can help spot clocked bikes. See mileage check.

Northern Ireland Bikes

Northern Ireland bikes are registered with the DVLA but tested by the DVA. Read about the Driver and Vehicle Agency for how testing works there.

Common Mistakes

  • Relying on the plate rather than the frame number.
  • Accepting a photocopy of the V5C.
  • Skipping the history check on a bike that looks clean.
  • Not checking whether the VIN stamp has been altered.
  • Buying without seeing the bike and paperwork together.

Before you pay

  1. Match frame, engine and V5C numbers.
  2. Run a history check.
  3. Check MOT and tax status.
  4. Pay by a traceable method.

Where The Official Answer Lives

For registration and V5C questions, use GOV.UK and the DVLA; for stolen reports, the police. See the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service for what the official lookup returns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a motorcycle VIN check?

It is the process of reading the VIN or frame number on a bike, comparing it with the V5C and engine number, and using a history check to see finance, write-off and stolen records. A registration lookup alone does not show the VIN, so you must inspect the frame.

Where is the VIN on a motorbike?

Usually on the steering head or the frame near the headstock, sometimes on a plate or sticker or on a lower frame rail. The position varies by manufacturer. Use a torch, clean the area gently and compare the stamped digits with the V5C.

Can I do a bike VIN number check for free?

You can read and compare the numbers yourself at no cost, and a free registration lookup confirms make, model, colour, MOT and tax. Finance, theft and write-off information normally needs a paid history check or a police enquiry.

Does the free number plate lookup show the VIN?

No. It shows vehicle details such as make, model, colour, fuel type, engine size, year, MOT history and tax status. The VIN is on the frame and the V5C. A manufacturer or a commercial history service may link a VIN to a registration.

How many characters is a motorcycle VIN?

Modern bikes usually have a 17-character VIN. Older bikes may have a shorter frame number. Whichever it is, the V5C records it, and it should match what is stamped on the frame exactly.

How do I know if a bike has been stolen?

Compare the frame number with the V5C, look for signs of tampering and run a history check that includes police stolen markers. Do not buy if the numbers do not match, the V5C is missing or the seller avoids showing the bike with its paperwork.

Can a VIN show if a motorbike has finance?

A commercial history check uses the VIN or registration to search finance records. A free lookup does not show finance. If the bike is on finance and you buy it, the lender may still have a claim over it.

Is the engine number the same as the VIN?

No. The engine number is stamped on the engine casing. The VIN or frame number is on the frame. The V5C records both, and a mismatch can indicate a replaced engine or a problem with the bike's identity.

What if the VIN on the bike does not match the V5C?

Do not buy it. A mismatch can mean a clerical error, a rebuilt frame or a stolen or cloned bike. Ask the seller to explain with paperwork and, if in doubt, report your concerns to the police.

Does a Northern Ireland bike have a different VIN?

No. VINs follow the same standards. The bike is registered with the DVLA and tested by the DVA in Northern Ireland, so the V5C and frame number checks work the same way.
